Walkoththamalli (wild coriander) A Medicine for Diabetes

Scoparia Dulcis is the scientific name for walkoththamalli (wild coriander). It is a valuable medicinal plant though you may be unaware.

The seeds of walkoththamalli are similar to those of koththamalli plants but because they grow in the forest they are called "walkoththamalli", though there are numerous names given to it.

The leaves of these plants which grow to a height of about 7cms are extremely small, and those leaves resemble bebila leaves. The flowers are small and white.

This medicinal plant is especially suitable for the treatment of diabetes which is called in Ayurveda as 'madhumegaya'. It is useful to control the sugar level. There is nothing untoward in boiling the walkoththamalli and drinking it frequently by a patient whose sugar level is always shooting up. However, because it brings down the sugar level swiftly , it should not be consumed throughout.

The best advice is to make a concoction mixed with leafy greens, and drink once or twice a week. There are also patients whose blood sugar level sometimes do not drop to the expected level .It is best if such patients follow the advice of an Ayurveda doctor, and continue until the sugar level is controlled.

The doctors who treat the patients include this herb in their prescriptions of walkoththamalli plant paspanguwa because it is such a reliable medicinal herb. By eating the young and matured leaves of these plants with food, women with menstrual disorders can get cured. It also has anti emetic properties, and also stimulates appetite. Besides it is also a medication for liver cancer and liver inflammation patients.

If you are to use it as food, the tender leaves and the leaves can be taken mixed with other assorted edible leaves by slicing them and making a 'mellum'. If you are to make a beverage, the roots of the plant can be boiled, and consumed.
