A bogus Police team was busted at a location in Gampaha after they allegedly kidnapped a prominent businessman from Panadura three months ago.

Three persons of the four-member gang were rounded up by sleuths from the Kalutara District Crimes Detection Bureau (KDVDB), a senior Police official said yesterday.

The suspects clad in Police uniform had abducted the businessman after claiming they were from the Peliyagoda Crimes Division Unit, he said. They later released the businessman unharmed after relieving him of cash and jewellery worth around Rs 3 million, the official added.

Three vehicles, believed to be stolen were also recovered following the arrest of the gang, while a search is on for at least another 11 vehicles, the official further said.

Police are currently hunting for the leader of the gang who has been described as an Army deserter.
