Former Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police (SDIG) Jaffna Division Lalith Jayasinghe was arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) yesterday after he is alleged to have blocked the arrest of a key suspect in the gang rape and murder of 18-year-old student S. Vithiya on 13 May 2015 at Punkuduthivu in Jaffna.

According to a top most officer with the CID, the SDIG is alleged to have provided assistance for the suspect to evade arrest shortly after the rape and murder of the student.

Senior DIG Jayasinghe was arrested when he was summoned to CID in Colombo to record a statement and is due to be produced before the Kayts Magistrate later today, the official added.

At the time of his arrest the SDIG was posted in the Kandy Division.

Among the nine suspects arrested in connection with the rape and murder of the school girl was a Sri Lankan born Swiss national who had managed to flee from Colombo following the incident.

He was subsequently arrested at a guest house in Wellawatte while making plans to leave the country.

Earlier, several senior police officers involved in the investigation were also transferred and the investigations were taken over by the CID.

The body of the 18-year-old schoolgirl was recovered from an abandoned building on the morning of 14 May 2015. She had been abducted the previous day and later gang raped before being murdered.
