Davis Cup Group III tie 2017 Sri Lanka down Jordan 2-1

CT Sports: Sri Lanka secured a 2-1 victory over Jordan on the first day of the Group III tie of the Asia Oceania Davis Cup by BNP Paribas, played at SLTA clay courts yesterday. In the first single of the Pool 'A' tie, Harshana Godamanna defeated Seif Adas 6-3, 6-2, while Sharmal Dissanayake defeated Mousa Alkotop in the second singles 6-2, 6-4.

Sri Lanka's duo Sharmal Dissanayake and Harshana Godamanna were defeated by Jordan's duo Hamzeh Al Alaswad and Mousa Alkotop in the doubles tie with scores of 6-4 and 6-5 (retired).

Meanwhile, Pacific Oceania also secured a 3-nil win over Syria in their match played at the same venue. Pacific Oceania won the first single 6-3, 6-2 while the second singles was won 6-4, 6-0 and the doubles 6-3, 6-3.

In Pool 'B' Lebanon won 2-1 over Turkmenistan, while Qatar sealed a 2-1 win over United Arab Emirates.

The matches are played on a round robin format and the winner of Pool 'A' will play against the runner-up of Pool 'B' and the winner of Pool 'B' will play against the runner-up of Pool 'A' to determine which two nations will be promoted to Asia/Oceania Zone Group II in 2018.

The Davis Cup, referred to as the World Cup of tennis, is the premier men's tennis event competed by a total of 130 nations around the world. The championship that started in 1900 completes its 117th year with Argentina having claimed the most recent triumph last year.
