Official poverty line jumps Rs 68

The Department of Census and Statistics reported that 14 districts out of the 25 of the country remained below the poverty line during the month of June this year, while 11 were above it.

The department outlined the national poverty line to be at Rs 4,352 for the month of June.

The national poverty line has improved Rs 68 from May this year and Rs 314 from September last year. According to the statistics Ratnapura, Moneragala, Badulla, Anuradhapura, Kurunegala, Galle, Matara and Hambantota recorded the 'minimum expenditure per person per month to fulfil the basic needs' below Rs 4,250 during the month, while Polonnaruwa, Puttalam, Ampara, Mullaitivu, Jaffna and Kandy though recoded figures higher than Rs 4,250, were still below the official poverty line of Rs 4,352.

Monaragala was recorded as the lowest at Rs 3955, while Colombo remained to be at the highest at Rs 4524.
In addition to Colombo, Kalutara, Gampaha, Matale, Nuwara Eliya, Mannar, Vavunia, Kilinochchi, Baticaloa, Trincomalee, and Kegalle were above the official national poverty line.
