The Free Trade Zone Solidarity Protection Group (FTZSPG) yesterday (17) called on the Government to enact the recommendations of the report compiled pertaining to the death and injuries to workers during the 2011 protest at the Katunayake Free Trade Zone.

The group said, in a press communiqué, that those responsible for the death of the Roshane Chanaka must be punished.

Convener of the FTZSPG Chamila Thushari claimed that those who sustained injuries must also receive compensation.

She said the Mahanama Thilakarathne Report was handed over to the then President on 15 July 2011, but it wasn't published or acknowledged. Furthermore, 11 fundamental rights applications had been listed for trial in the Supreme Court against the indiscriminate shooting of the protesters by Police.

The Convener asked that action be initiated according to the recommendations of the report and that those guilty be punished accordingly and in addition those who sustained injuries be fairly compensated.

The 21-year-old FTZ worker, Roshane Chanaka, was shot dead by Police during the protest on 30 May 2011.
