President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe informed, through their attorneys, Colombo High Court Judge, Vikum Kaluarachchi, that they will not be able to be present in Court during the trial against former United National Party (UNP) General Secretary Tissa Attanayake yesterday due to prior official engagements.

Attanayake is on trial for allegedly forging the signature of the two men......during the run up to January 2015 presidential election.

The Judge informed the attorney that the next hearing will be held on 4 December and directed the two to appear in Court on that date. Attanayake was present in Court along with 12 witnesses for the prosecution. The case will be heard between 4 and 12 December.

The accused had been charged under Section 3(1) of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) Act No. 56 of 2007. This is the first time in Sri Lanka that an accused had been indicted in the High Court by the Attorney General for an offence that comes under this Act.

On 22 December 2014, during the run up to the 2015 presidential election the former UNP General Secretary told media that there was a secret agreement between the then Common Opposition Candidate Maithripala Sirisena, UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe and the Tamil National Alliance.
