The Australian Foreign Affairs Ministry yesterday announced that the Australian Government will assist Sri Lanka to combat the dengue epidemic which has currently become a severe problem in the country.

The announcement was issued ahead of Australian Foreign Affairs Minister Julie Bishop's official visit to Sri Lanka.

Bishop will be visiting both Sri Lanka and India from 18 to 20 July.

The visit is to strengthen Australia's bilateral, economic and security relations with two important partners in the region, Bishop said in a statement.

Furthermore, she added that she hopes to meet President Maithripala Sirisena, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, Foreign Minister Ravi Karunanayake and several other ministers to discuss security cooperation and explore new economic opportunities in science, resources and energy.

"President Sirisena and I will announce Australian assistance to combat dengue fever in Sri Lanka and discuss the progress on the implementation of Sri Lanka's reconciliation process, which is critical to its long-term security and prosperity," Bishop stated.
