The prevailing drought is likely to continue despite heavy rainfall in several areas in Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Vavuniya and Batticaloa, a senior official with the Disaster Management Centre (DMC) said yesterday.

Assistant Director of the DMC, Pradeep Kodippily told Ceylon Today said that the pattern of the rainfall will not change the prevailing drought conditions in the affected areas. According to latest figures maintained by the DMC, more than one million people in 17 districts have been affected owing to the severe drought since mid December last year. The worst affected area is the Northern Province, Kodippily added. The DMC has also taken steps to distribute drinking water for the affected people in 10 districts that covers 88 Divisional Secretariats.

Meanwhile, the Department of Meteorology has stated that rain could be expected shortly in the North Western and Eastern provinces.
