Car plunges into river Two dead, three critically injured

Two persons were killed and three seriously injured when the car they were travelling in veered off the road and plunged into the Gurugoda Oya on Thursday, Police said yesterday.

A father and his son were killed while three female passengers were seriously injured in the incident, Police added.

The incident occurred near the Pitagaldeniya Bridge on the Kegalle –Avissaswella Road, according to police.

The injured were admitted to the Kegalle General Hospital in a critical condition.

The deceased were identified as Rajapaksege Abeyratne Karunatilleka (57) and his son Dushmantha Karunatilleka (32).

Ranhavadige Gedera Shriyalatha Malkanthi (51), Nishandi Prasangika (27) and Sara Jesika Perera were identified as those injured in the incident.

Initial investigations have found out that the father had opted to drive the vehicle after his son had complained of fatigue.

The group was returning to their home in Kaduganawa after attending a function at Horana the previous day, police said.

The post-mortem of the dead was to be performed by Special Judicial Medical Officer (JMO) of the Kegalle Hospital Dr. Ramesh Alagiyawanna while Pindeniya Police is conducting further inquiries.
