New LG Draft Bill in Parliament on 24 August

The new Local Government Draft Bill with amendments will be tabled in Parliament on 24 August.

Leader of the House Minister Lakshman Kiriella said in a statement yesterday the draft Bill has been prepared with inputs from all stakeholders including civil society groups and women's organizations. The statement also said both the Government and the Opposition agree with the content of the Bill.

Minister of Provincial Councils and Local Governments Faiszer Musthapha is expected to table the Bill.

...Meanwhile, Leader of the Joint Opposition Dinesh Gunawardena said during the Party Leaders' meeting that no outside amendments should be added to the new Draft Bill. According to the amendments, the future elections will be held in combination with first-past-the-post, as well as the PR systems. A source from the Elections Commission said all Assistant Elections Commissioners took part in a special meeting to discuss the new Draft Bill.
