Ministry of Sustainable Development and Wildlife is considering imposing restrictions on the use of animals for safari activities.
Minister Gamini Jayawickrama Perera said this decision was......made in the wake of the recent tragic death of a safari elephant due to medical negligence and inadequate care. Kandula, an elephant that was used for safari activities in Habarana, had to be given emergency medical treatment on Sunday (10) after the animal collapsed inside a truck in the Kadugannawa area. He was being transported to Kegalle from Habarana after falling ill. The elephant had collapsed due to the unsafe method used for transport, police said. Minister Perera said that a number of elephants are being using for safari activities by persons who mislead authorities into believing that those animals are used for religious activities. Therefore, time has come to prevent the use of animals for safari activities, he pointed out. Moreover, the minister has appointed a special committee to probe the 'Kandula' incident. Former High Court Judge Bandula Atapattu heads the committee. (MD)
