The Sabaragamuwa Provincial Council (SPC) yesterday (12) approved the proposed 20th Amendment to the Constitution by a majority of 21 votes.

It was reported that 29 members voted for the Amendment, while 8 voted against. The Joint Opposition (JO) councillors voted against the draft. The SPC now joins the Eastern and Western PCs which approved the Amendment on 11 September.

The 20th Amendment to the Constitution, among its other provisions, seeks to hold all PC Elections on one and the same day. The Northern, Uva and Southern Provincial Councils have already voted against the 20th Amendment.

North-Western and Central PCs are yet to vote on the Amendment. The North-Western PC is seeking legal advice over the proposed Amendment claiming that they have noted several errors in the draft Bill.
