Kilinochchi Zonal Education Director Thirugnanam John Quintus said students of the region are involved in various illegal activities including illegal sand mining.

These children are under threat, they are given odd jobs, which are mostly dangerous to their lives and are also directing them towards involvement in illegal activities.

'We undertook awareness programmes to explain to their parents about the threat faced by these children. However, parents and children in remote villages have not understood the negative impact and they continue to send their children to do odd jobs,' he said.

Recalling an incident, Thirugnanam John Quintus said, an advanced level student who was sitting for the recent exams had been arrested by Police, for being involved in illegal sand mining activities. This student had an exam the following day, nevertheless, he was produced in Court and had to pay the fine to be released. However, by the time he had completed the formalities to be released it was too late to sit for the examination. This further exemplifies the importance of safeguarding students from being involved in such activities, he added.
