Chief Minister of Western Province Isura Devapriya has relieved two Provincial Ministers of their portfolios yesterday and appointed two other councillors to replace them.

Chief Government Whip of the Western Province Gunasiri Jayanath and Leader of the House Sunil Jayamini, have been removed and Chandana Jayakodi and Hector Bethmage have been appointed for the portfolios respectively.

Chairman of the Western Provincial Council Sunil Jayarathna told Ceylon Today that he received instructions from the CM Isura Devapriya to appoint two councillors to the vacant positions. "I appointed two senior and experienced councillors who are capable of handling the portfolios," said Jayarathna.

When inquired why the CM has decided to remove the two ministers, Jayarathna said that the CM has done so on the instructions of President Maithripala Sirisena.

"The President wanted all the councillors to gain experience in holding portfolios. He instructed the CM to rotate the responsibilities so that equality is preserved," Jayarathna commented.
