Sri Lanka needs to be cognizant of global realities if the Hambantota Port Development Project is to be transformed to a global logistical, maritime and trading hub.

This was said yesterday (22), by the Vice President of China Merchants Port Holdings...... Ltd (CM Ports) Hang Tian, which has signed a US$ 1.1 billion agreement to develop the Hambantota Port. However, development work is yet to take place. Hang's reference was that Sri Lanka needs to recognize China's true position in the world, as the world's second largest economic power as well as the world's second largest military power. However, national security vis-à-vis the Hambantota Port is fully in the hands of Colombo. Previously, Chinese submarines, during the Mahinda Rajapaksa era had docked at Hambantota.

Sri Lanka Ports Authority Chairman Dr. Parakrama Dissanayake said that the Hambantota Port will be operational by November. However, Hang remained non-committal. The event was organized by the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce.
