Maliyadeva BMC and Army SC win titles

A mega netball carnival was organized to celebrate the 145th anniversary of Colombo Malay Cricket Club on 23 September at the Padang off Kew Road.

Maliyadeva BMV Kurunegala emerged champions in the schools event when they narrowly beat Holy Family Convent Kurunegala by 13 points to 12 in the final.

In the schools semi-finals Maliyadeva BMV beat Girls High Schools Kandy 15-12 while Holy Family Convent beat Kolonnawa Balika MV 17-4. Army SC emerged champions in the event for clubs when they beat Hatton National Bank narrowly by 15 points to 14 in the final.

The clubs event was played on a league basis with Army SC and HNB finishing equal on 42.5 points each. Thus they met in the final.

A dozen school teams and ten club teams participated in this netball carnival. They played on six courts with 24 umpires and four technical officials to supervise. They played to a full 15 minutes with the time being divided into 7-1-7.

Trophies and cash prizes were presented to the champion and runner-up teams.

Rosy Senanayake was the Chief Guest.

Special awards were given away in the schools event to:

Best shooter: Chandani Gayathika of Maliyadeva BMV.

Best defender: Jinali Balasuriya of Maliyadeva BMV.

Best centre player: Tharushi Lakmini of HFC Kurunegala.

The clubs event saw Thishala Algama of Army SC being the best shooter.

Best defensive player was Samudri Abeygunawardena of Army SC.

Best Shooter was Gayanjali Amarawansha of HNB.

Thishala Algama, Captain of Army SC was crowned Netball Queen and was presented with a precious stone and a dinner voucher for two.
