SL women down Thailand to win plate

Vastly improved Sri Lanka Women's rugby team managed to live up to their dream by securing the plate championship in the first leg of the Asian Women's Sevens Series which was concluded in South Korea on Sunday.

They beat Thailand in the final 24 points 12 to finish the tournament in fifth position.

Sri Lanka led the first half 12-0 though one converted try and a try which were scored by Ayesha Kaluarachchi and Thanuja Weerakkody. Thailand returned to the game in the second half with a converted try, but a determined Sri Lankan girls came back with two quick tries through Anusha Attanayake and Dulani Pallikondage helped Sri Lanka to seal victory over Thailand who managed to score another try before the long whistle.

In the plate semis Sri Lanka beat Singapore 19-15 in a hard fought game. In the Cup quarters Sri Lanka lost to Kazakhstan 27-7.
