Students in ‘Osari Pota’ row Governor defends CM

Governor of the Central Province Niluka Ekanayake yesterday defended Chief Minister Sarath Ekanayake who had come under severe criticism for allowing 250 primary school children to participate in a public wedding held in the open on the main Kandy-Colombo Road late last week.

Declaring that the Chief Minister was not......responsible for the incident, Governor Ekanayake instead said that the full responsibility for the incident should be taken by the Regional Educational Secretary.

Chief Minister Sarath Ekanayake participated in the event where the kids who were used to hold the saree fall. The students were from the Sarath Ekanayake Junior College.

The event was aimed at a reaching a Guinness World Record where the saree fall extended for some 3-plus kilometers.

Furthermore investigations have revealed that the school children were assembled at the school premises from 2.00 am on that day.
The incident drew flak both locally and internationally since it involved school children that had been taken out of their classrooms for a private event.

The National Child Protection Authority (NCPA) and the Education Ministry are conducting separate investigations into the incident. (MD)
