Kahawatta killing Ex-Snr DIG Jayasinghe arrested Allegedly concealed evidence

Former Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Lalith Jayasinghe, who was arrested yesterday for allegedly concealing evidence during an investigation into a fatal shooting of a political party supporter at Kahawatta, Ratnapura in 2015, was released on bail.

The incident also involved the former Deputy Minister of Power and Energy Premalal Jayasekara, Police Spokesman Superintendent (SP) Ruwan Gunasekara said.

Jayasinghe was arrested by Special Investigation Unit (SIU) sleuths when he answered summons to record a statement. He was produced before the Pelmadulla Magistrate's Court where he was granted bail.

Jayasekara was arrested on 9 January, 2015 in connection with the shooting incident which took place at an election rally attended by presidential candidate Maithripala Sirisena.

A political party supporter, who was engaged in decorating the election stage, was wounded in the shooting and succumbed to injuries in hospital.

On 5 January, 2015 the Pelmadulla Magistrate issued an arrest warrant on Deputy Minister Premalal Jayasekara, Sabaragamuwa Provincial Councillor Aruna Nilantha and Kahawatta Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman Vajira Darshana in connection with the shooting.
