Minister of Public Administration and Management Ranjith Madduma Bandara is to initiate a series of national events in August 2018 in Moneragala, to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the Wellassa Rebellion, says the Ministry's Media Unit. The first discussion in this regard was held on 6 October.

This uprising was the first of its kind against the British during the colonial period. The events will commemorate all the heroes who were part of the rebellion. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Education and Provincial Education Departments plan to hold speech, essay, and poetry contests for school children.

The Ministry of Postal Services will issue stamps with the names of the Wellassa heroes, and hold a competition for creative work on this theme. The other ministries to get involved in this event are Sports, Irrigation & Water Resources and Agriculture. The National Cinema Corporation is to make a record-breaking movie about this uprising.

Officials further discussed the Educational and Trade Exhibition to be held in Moneragala to coincide with this event. Madduma Bandara appointed a committee, including Secretary to the Ministry J.J. Rathnasiri, Secretary to Ministry of Power and Energy Suren Batagoda, Former Badulla GA W. Premadasa, his Adviser, Newton Perera, and his Personal Secretary R.M.K.B. Rathnayake, to plan this event. Several other officials and academics also participated in the dialogue.
