Former Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa will support the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP)'s initiatives on issues of national interest, former Minister Basil Rajapaksa said yesterday.

"He never went on election stage but he supported the party at important moments. Gotabaya Rajapaksa is against attempts to divide the country and that is why he established the Eliya organization as well," he said.

Rajapaksa also added that the SLPP will have 50 per cent of women and youth on its candidate list and thanked the Government for ensuring that 25 per cent of local councilors will be women.

"This is something we couldn't do and I must thank the Government. But they should also have ensured that there is adequate youth representation at local councils. The SLPP will also have 25 per cent youth in their nomination lists," he said.

Meanwhile, the SLPP has also successfully completed a membership drive where 100 per cent of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) members of some villages joined the SLPP, Rajapaksa said.

"Although we are the youngest among major political parties, we have the most momentum," he said.
