Assistant Superintendant of Police (ASP), Thushara Daluwatte who assaulted a protester in Hambantota recently has been transferred to the Matara Police Division with immediate effect following a decision by the National Police Commission (NPC) yesterday (12).

NPC Secretary, Ariyadasa Cooray said: "We received a complaint from Dallas Alahapperuma and some other MPs, and the complaint was discussed at an NPC meeting. Then the Commission decided to appoint a three-member committee to go into detail and submit a report. In order to facilitate that inquiry, the NPC decided to transfer ASP Daluwatte."

Video footage of ASP Daluwatte assaulting the protester was widely circulated in the media.

A protest was organized by members of the Joint Opposition including MP Namal Rajapaksa, against moves to hand over operations of the Hambantota Port and Mattala Airport to foreign companies.

The protest was scheduled to be held near the Mattala Airport, however the venue was changed to the Indian Consulate after Police obtained a Court Order preventing any protests near the airport.
