the Court of Appeal yesterday instructed the Attorney General's Department to conclude the investigations into the 2012 November Welikada Prison riot and produce a comprehensive report on it by 6 December.

This was in response to a Mandamus Writ filed by an eyewitness to the incident, Sudesh Nandimal.

The witnesses' lawyer Senaka Perera told the...... Ceylon Today that the Attorney General informed Court that 75 percent of the investigation into the incident had been completed.

The incident in which 27 prisoners died and more than 40 were injured in two days of violence at the country's largest jail has been investigated by two separate commissions as well as the CID.

However there have been no prosecutions as yet in Court.

In the petition the Police, the Commissioner General of Prisons, the Director CID, the Minister of Prison Reform and the Attorney General are cited as respondents.

The Appeal Court bench comprised Justice D. L. Dehideniya and Justice Shiran Guneratne.

The eyewitness Nandimal accused the incumbent government of being lackadaisical with the legal proceedings of the case.

"The petition was postponed for one and a half months allowing the police, CID and all other institutions who were presently conducting investigations to be more comprehensive in their findings. They were instructed to produce a report to the Court within one month and a half. Five years has lapsed since the riot took place, the Police effort to investigate the riot is very unsatisfactory," Nandimal said.
