Anika flees amidst threats SG Kodagoda seeks protective custody for family

Anika Wijesuriya, whose testimony indicated that the former Finance Minister may have received gratification in the form of a luxury apartment in Colombo from Arjun Aloysius, has fled the country due to threats to her life.

Her family members claim that they continue to receive threats, as of now.

The unfortunate predicament of the key witness in the Presidential Commission of Inquiry into the Treasury Bonds Auction at the Central Bank of Sri Lanka was revealed before the Commission yesterday (17), by Additional Solicitor General Yasantha Kodagoda, PC.

Kodagoda making an application noted that Vijith Wijesuriya, elder brother of Anika, had complained that his family was continuously threatened by an individual known as Shanil Nethicumara.

Nethicumara had called the Wijesuriya family last Saturday (14) and made ambiguous threats. During the call he had referred to the former Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake as 'uncle.'

Claiming that there is an imminent threat to the lives of the Wijesuriya family, ASG Kodagoda requested the Commission to put them under protective custody and to carry out a threat assessment. He also requested the Commission to carry out a criminal investigation against Nethicumara on charges of criminal intimidation.

Kodagoda also said, that Nethicumara seemed to be acting on behalf of the individual Anika Wijesuriya had testified against. Wijesuriya, a director of East-West Properties, gave evidence to the Commission regarding the lease of a Penthouse Apartment used by former Finance Minister Karunanayake and family, which was allegedly paid for...... by Arjun Aloysius of Perpetual Treasuries Ltd.

Testifying before the Commission, she claimed that the apartment was owned by her and was leased at a monthly rental of Rs 1.45 million to the Karunanayake family in 2016. The lease agreement was reached with a company, maintained by Karunanayake's daughter, to which the Rs 7.3 million was transferred by Perpetual Capital Holdings Pvt. Ltd. Subsequently, the Penthouse had been purchased for Rs 165 million by Global Transportation and Logistics (Pvt) Ltd, of which Ravi Karunanayake and daughter Onela Viranthi Karunanayake are directors.

On the basis of which, on 2 August, the former Finance Minister was summoned to give evidence where he claimed, being unaware of the purchase by Arjun Aloysius, through his daughter's company.
