Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) Propaganda Secretary Vijitha Herath yesterday (18) said that his party would file a Defamation Lawsuit claiming Rs 500 million in damages, against former Minister Johnston Fernando.

On 15 October, during a public gathering at Tangalle, Fernando alleged that the JVP Leader Anura Kumara Dissanayaka has taken a colossal sum of money from the United National Party (UNP) Chairman Malik Samarawickrema. Thus, the JVP Leader was now acting on the 'orders' of the UNP due to that reason, Fernando hit out.

Responding to that, the JVP said that the party has decided to file a Defamation Lawsuit against Fernando over the false claims he made against its leader. People like Fernando, have no dignity and have become 'political refugees' after the falling of the Rajapaksa regime. That is why they behave like this, throwing mud at the JVP, Herath asserted.

"During the inquiry into the Defamation Lawsuit, we will be able to cross-examine Johnston Fernando on the corrupt activities at Lanka Sathosa during the time he was the minister in charge. So, Fernando making false claims against the JVP Leader actually has a positive side because the people have an opportunity to know the truth during the magisterial inquiry," the JVP said.
