Smugglers detained at BIA

A SriLankan Airlines cabin crew member was detained by Customs at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) yesterday morning for attempting to smuggle gold jewellery into the country.

Customs Spokesman, Sunil Jayaratne said that the cabin crew member had concealed 53 kg of gold jewellery in a specially designed belt. The gold jewellery was worth Rs 26 million.

The 50-year-old cabin crew member had arrived from Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, and was detained following a routine security check.
Meanwhile, a Malaysian national was detained at the Departure Terminal of the BIA for attempting to smuggle US$ 35,000 out of the country. The Customs Spokesman noted that the 53-year-old Malaysian, bound for Kuala Lumpur, was detained by Customs on Wednesday evening. The foreign currency was confiscated.
