Sri Lanka's only internationally -renowned International Technical Official (ITO) P.H.D. Waidyathilake has decided to call it a day from all ITO assignments in the future.

Waidyathilake has been in the ITO panel of the IAAF from the very inception of the ITO scheme in 2001. He is only one of the few ITOs to have continued from the very inception. He has had the privilege of officiating at all major athletics championships including Olympic Games, Youth Olympic Games, World championships, World Cup, World University Games, Commonwealth Games, and IAAF Diamond League etc.

An engineer by profession ,Waidyathilake has always passed the ITO examinations on top, out of the Asians. The next ITO exam is to be held in London on 21 and 22 October and Waidyathilake has declined attending it. In reply to the invitation Waidyathilake has stated that he feels that he can work for another year or two and did not want to deprive another's opportunity to enter the ITO panel.

He had also mentioned that he will be happy to continue as a TOECS lecturer to impart his knowledge to the others. He has passed the Level 1 lecturers course in 1995 and in 2007 was appointed a Level 11 lecturer.

In 2013, the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) invited the IAAF - ITOs to face their examination and he had passed that exam also with ease.

Since then, he has officiated as an ITO and a member of the Jury of Appeal at IPC World Championships, Asian Championships, Asia vs. Oceania Championships, etc,.
