The Centre for Diabetes Endocrinology and Cardio-Metabolism (CDEM) will be conducting free HbA1c diabetic tests, as well as a Diabetes Volunteer Program, to mark World Diabetes Day on 14 November.

CDEM will offer the most important test in diabetes for free during 12-19 November at the CDEM Diabetic Centre on Noris Canal Road, Colombo 10. HbA1c provides results for a 3-month average sugar level in blood without needing any prior fasting, unlike the typical blood sugar level test. CDEM has conducted free screenings of over 5000 people with diabetes and other related diseases to date.
CDEM will also organize a Diabetes Volunteer Program on 19 November from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Waters Edge Hotel, aiming to prevent diabetes and improve lives. The International Diabetes Federation (IDF), in their message for World Diabetes Day, mentioned, "All women with diabetes require affordable and equitable access to care and education, to better manage their diabetes and improve their health outcomes."

CDEM also conducts a free diabetes education program, enlisting 30 per program with the purpose of imparting crucial knowledge on the prevention, early detection and management of diabetes. The program is held every week from 9-11a.m. at the CDEM Centre, guided by consultant diabetologists, cardiologists, pathologists, clinical nutritionists and pharmacists. The program will be the first-ever structured diabetes education program in Sri Lanka.

The CDEM laboratory recently obtained ISO9001:2015 certification. The laboratory performs a wide repertoire of tests in different fields, from routine to highly-specialized. The tests include routine chemistry (glucose, HbA1c, renal function tests, liver function tests, lipid profiles, tests for heart attacks and heart failure), special tests (thyroid functions, testosterone, cortisols, vitamin D, insulin and many hormones), haematology (full blood count, prothrombin time, blood picture), microbiology (urine and wound swab cultures). World Diabetes Day is an important day for CDEM, as the first and only specialty facility in Sri Lanka for diabetes. Hence, CDEM feels it has a duty to screen for diabetes, treat the disease and prevent its complications. The CDEM was launched by President Maithripala Sirisena on World Diabetes Day last year.
