The March 12 Movement is in the process of creating a platform for politicians seeking candidacy at the forthcoming elections, to gain recognition via the adoption of and adherence to certain criteria, relating to proper political conduct.

The election monitoring body, People's Action for Free and Fair Elections (PAFFREL) is presently drafting the criteria which includes publicly declaring one's assets and liabilities, stating that one will not engage in politics based on ethnicity, religion and caste, all of which negatively impacts communal harmony, refraining from hate speech, refraining from acting as a contractor to and with the Government upon election to office and refraining from using polythene, amongst others such aspects.

Any politician principally agreeing with such criteria can use the platform which will be made available by us, Executive Director of PAFFREL, Rohana Hettiarachchi said.

While a politician does not have to declare jewellery in his spouse's possession, he must declare assets such as land, vehicles and sources of income, he stated.

"These criteria are for the purpose of social harmony. Apart from us, this platform will involve participation of the area's religious leaders, civil society leaders, and divisional secretaries, amongst others," he further added.
