Monk involved in Rohingya siege given bail

The monk, Arambepola Rathanasara Thera who was arrested for threatening the Rohingya refugees was granted bail by the Mount Lavinia Magistrate's Court yesterday (13).

Chairman of the Sinhale Jathika Balavegaya movement, Rathanasara Thera was picked up by a special Police team from a location in Nittambuwa last month.

Rathanasara Thera along with another monk and several others stormed the refugee shelter in Mount Lavinia on 26 September that was housing 31 Rohingya refugees that included 16 children and seven women.

The refugees were later transferred to the Boossa Detention Camp for security reasons. According to the Police, at the time of the arrest, the monk had been in possession of a forged identity card bearing the name of a layman, adding that a separate investigation will be held in this connection.

The monk was subsequently handed over to the Colombo Crimes Division for further investigations.Thus far eight suspects have been arrested in connection with the alleged incident. Five of them were granted bail by the Mount Lavinia Magistrate's Court on 17 October.
