Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE) stated that the SLBFE Act, No. 21 of 1985 is likely to be repealed and replaced.
Working Director of the Bureau, Upul Deshapriya said that in the proposed amendments to the Act, they would include human trafficking as a subject under the purview of the new piece of legislation which they hope to get enacted.

The scope of the SLBFE is to be widened and as part of it, punishments for human trafficking are likely to be made more severe, he added.

According to Deshapriya, many steps towards the new law have already been completed, adding also that it would be handed over to the Legal Draftsman's Department by the end of the year.
