Rajagiriya tragic accident Two students granted bail

Two students, who were injured in the Rajagiriya accident, received bail yesterday (14), while recuperating at the Colombo National Hospital.

Police sources told Ceylon Today, that two of the students of Royal College, Colombo involved in the accident received bail, on order of the Colombo Additional Magistrate Chandana Kalansuriya. The two 18-year-olds, who incidentally drove the pick-up truck and the car that were involved in the accident, were however, not officially arrested due to their medical condition.

The two students were released on surety bail in Rs 500,000 each, the Police said.

One youth was killed and nine others sustained injuries when two vehicles veered off the road and hit a...... construction site in Rajagiriya on 12 November. Three students are currently in critical condition, with one student placed on life support, while four others are recuperating from their injuries. Some of the others have already been discharged.

The students were returning home from school after assisting in the final arrangements of the school media carnival, which was to be held later in the day, when the accident occurred. The accident had occurred when the driver lost control of the pickup vehicle which was seemingly racing with the other car.

One of the critically injured students is the son of a Royal College teacher.

The funeral of the deceased schoolboy was held on 12 November at the Dehiwala Mosque. The Principal of Royal College postponed all school events that were to be held this week as a mark of respect.
