Warrant issued on Jaliya Wickramasuriya For failure to appear in court

The Colombo Fort Magistrate's Court yesterday (17), issued an arrest warrant on former Sri Lankan Ambassador to the United States (US) Jaliya Wickramasuriya who is a nephew of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa. The arrest warrant was issued by Colombo Fort Magistrate Lanka Jayaratne.

The warrant was issued after Wickramasuriya failed to present himself in court when the matter was taken up yesterday.

The court also issued notices on those who had signed the securities required for bail.

Wickramasuriya who was previously arrested by the Financial Crimes Investigation Division (FCID) for the alleged misappropriation of funds amounting to USD 332,000 which had been allocated for the refurbishing the Sri Lankan Embassy building in Washington, DC was subsequently granted bail by the Colombo High Court, following which he had gone overseas for medical treatment.

The case is to be taken up on 5 January 2018.
