Gavin Hannibal's career spans more than 20 years, with many loyal customers along the way as he proudly established himself as a leading hairstylist. Starting at the age of 18 with Ramani Fernando, he gained the necessary knowledge and experience and ventured out on his own, opening his first salon at Gregory's Road. After being there for many years, now he has opened 'Gavin Ryan's Salon' at Independence Arcade. The location is easily accessible and when I visited the salon on Sunday, it was full of loyal clients. Of course, there were walk-ins as well. It was all about beauty, hair and conversations.

Service and experience
The salon provides all the usual services and you can get done anything you want. From hot oil massages and Moroccan baths to the usual haircuts, styling and beauty procedures. I opted for a facial and waxing. The service was great and I wasn't kept waiting for long. Within five minutes, I was taken for the appointment. The wax that was used is a Singaporean brand, made out of pine nut and camellia flower essence. It's a week since I got my waxing done, but the glow is still there.

After the wax session, I opted for a facial with the Jyunka brand which is made out of natural ingredients from Japan.
Before the facial, Nadeera discussed about my condition and what was good for skin. She made sure that the products used were fine with my skin combination.

The facial was done in two hours and I was told what to do to maintain the 'look.' The after-effects of it, is said to last two weeks, with proper care. During the facial, I was given a foot message to relax those tired feet. Having a foot message during a facial, is said to be good for the skin. The use of aromatic oil made it relaxing and revitalizing.
Nadeera kept emphasizing the importance of understanding one's skin and how to care for it. I was impressed with the service provided as well as her knowledge.

The prices are on par with high-end salons in Colombo. I felt pampered, especially with the foot message during the facial. However, making an appointment is good, as it gets busy.

Speaking to Gavin, who looked relaxed after standing for hours, he said that while his favourite hair colour was blue, he aspires someday to do Lady Gaga's hair. The most complicated hairdo he ever did was at the Asian Grand Hair Competition, when he had just 1/2 hour to style while being watched. He was placed first in the competition.

For Gavin, hard work is a must, and he lives by it. "Do everything best, wherever you are and whoever you working for."
His greatest achievement is opening his salon and he is planning to venture overseas in the future.
