National Snooker Championship Hunt begins today for the winner

The district level play offs of the National Snooker Championships will commence today, according to a press release. The championship is conducted by the Billiards and Snooker Federation of Sri Lanka and played for the U.W. Sumathipala Challenge Trophy.

The tournament is conducted for the 65th occasion and has attracted many top class players at district level and also the cream of outstanding novices spread around the island totaling 123 players.

According to the press release, with the idea of promoting novices to national level, the novices programme will go on till 2 December. 16 players will qualify to face 16 players who took part in the All Island competition last year.

Together they will play in the All Island competition this year: The 32 players will engage in a 'round robin' play off and 16 will qualify for the final round and contest for the U.W. Sumathipala Challenge Trophy. 19-year-old youth player Mohammed Fazil won his first national snooker title last year beating Mohammed Mubeen.

Fazil joined the ranks in the history of snooker as the youngest champion with that win. On his run to become champion he beat then holder of 18 championships Susantha Boteju in the semi-final round.
