National Congress Secretary General and Former Minister A.L.M. Athaullah requested the Commissioner of Elections to call for nominations for Local Government (LG) Elections at the end of January 2018 and conduct polls thereafter, taking into consideration the inclement weather in many parts of the country due to the North-East Monsoon from November to January.

Former Minister Athaullah in a letter to the Commissioner stated, "You are well aware that the period from November to January is the rainy season in many parts of the country due to the North East monsoon. Many elections have been held during this period in the past. We have had enough experience in having elections during rainy season.

"We have to give priority to protect people from natural disasters such as flooding and earth slips rather than political activities.

People do not show interest in political activities due to their personal difficulties resulting from the rain and thereby we have had low polling rates. Political parties could not engage in methodical election propaganda activities. Thus voters are ill informed to make a right choice. Candidates exploit the situation to attract voters by providing dry rations and other relief material which amount to a serious violation of election laws and create an unfair competition," he said.

Therefore, Athaullah urged the Commissioner to conduct LG elections as early as possible as well as call for nominations after the rainy season at the end of January 2018 and conduct polls thereafter.
