In a serious development, four refugees including a female were stabbed in a fracas at the Alandurai Sri Lankan Refugee Camp in the suburbs of Coimbatore.

The Indian Police said that the trouble started in the camp when a 25-year-old Tamil refugee (John) got into a drunken brawl and allegedly abused some neighbours in the camp on 20 November.

Another refugee, 29-year-old Raguvaran had questioned his action and told him to remain calm, but John, who was in an inebriated state had started quarrelling with him and stabbed him with a knife, the Indian Police said.

Hearing poor Raguvaran's cries, his 60-year-old father, Peethambaram came to his rescue, but he was also stabbed by John.

Two other Tamil refugees belonging to the same camp, 20-year-old Santharooban, and 32-year-old Menaga, who tried to rein in John, were also stabbed by him. John managed to slip away.

Menaga is receiving treatment at the Pooluvapptty Government Hospital and the other three victims were admitted to the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital.

The Alandurai Police were alerted and rushed to the refugee camp to record statements. The Alandurai Police have launched a manhunt for John, who is still at large.
