After the late night drama on Monday where nine members of the SL ODI team were recalled from the airport, Sports Minister Dayasiri Jayasekara finally approved the team yesterday following a meeting with SLC officials and skipper Thisara Perera.

SLC had sent nine members of the SL ODI team to the airport in order to fly them to Delhi without waiting for approval from the Sports Minister, which is a direct violation of the country's sports law. The Sports Minister who got to know about this had asked the team to return by Monday night, where some of the players had already boarded the plane and had to disembark.

Skipper Thisara Perera had called the Minister at that moment and had sought permission to leave but the Minister had stood his ground as he had already shown his displeasure to SLC officials' who continued the incompetent proceedings.

Also there were no media releases about the ODI team until last evening where the Minister had to intervene on that too and had to call SLC employee Vrai Raymond seeking an explanation for not releasing the team.

"Normally they should send the team names within 21days of the travel date. Selectors had finalized the team only by 1st. But that's not relevant for me. I asked them to select a pool of players (20 or so) prior to the final 15 to be selected later and send for approval."

SLC had sent a team to the Ministry for approval around 5:00 p.m. yesterday where obviously the Minister had no time to approve it or call for discussions or explanations if anything did arise. "Normally other teams (other sports including for Olympics) apply for visas after Ministry approval. But these guys think they are superior to others. The letter they sent stated there are 15 players and 4 standbys but there are names of 16 players and 4 standbys. So the letter itself is wrong," the Minister said.

Minister also explained that he had asked SLC to claim the additional fees for ticket cancelations or anything from the responsible official who seems to be CEO Ashley de Silva. The meeting was held with the participation of the SLC President Thilanga Sumathipala, Secretary Mohan de Silva, CEO Ashley de Silva and skipper Perera.
