Former Sri Lankan cricketer and Bangladeshi coach, Chandika Hathurusinghe, will assume duties as the head coach of Sri Lankan National Cricket Team later this month, Minister of Sports Dayasiri Jayasekera said yesterday.

Hathurusinghe returned to the country recently after resigning from his position as the Bangladeshi coach. Last month President of Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) Thilanga Sumathipala told Ceylon Today that a head coach for the Sri Lankan National team will be selected by December.

At a Cabinet briefing in November, the Minister revealed although Chandika Hathurusinghe received US$ 40,000 a month as Head Coach of Bangladesh, there is a possibility, (due to his patriotism), he will agree to a lesser amount to coach the Sri Lankan team.

"We must not forget why Hathurusinghe left the country. He was Sri Lanka's shadow coach under Australian Trevor Bayliss and was to take over the reins after the 2011 ICC World Cup. He was sacked in 2010 by people who are now shedding crocodile tears about Sri Lankan cricket," he said at the time.

Thilan Samaraweera, who was the batting coach for Bangladesh, will join Hathurusinghe.

The Sports Minister added that Sri Lanka is to play Bangladesh after the Indian tour; thus Hathurusinghe's first tour might be to Bangladesh.
