A number of Joint Opposition (JO) members will join the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) in the coming weeks, co-Cabinet Spokesman Minister Dayasiri Jayasekera said yesterday.

Commenting on National Freedom Front (NFF) stalwart Jayantha Wijesekera joining the party and reports of NFF MP Weerakumara Dissanayake also joining the SLFP, Jayasekera, speaking at the Cabinet press briefing, said that in time more JO members will join the SLFP.

"Most of the MPs and leading figures who have joined JO now understand that establishing a new party is not working out. They realize that the path to power is too long," he said.

Jayasekera added that most of the SLFP MPs who are with the JO are now reassessing their decisions. Echoing Minister of Ports Mahinda Samarasinghe, Jayasekera also said that Legal action will be taken against any Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) member who supports the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) at the coming local council elections.

If anyone violates the party constitution and supports the SLPP, the party will find out and take the necessary action, the Minister said.
"Technology is advanced. As Minister Samarasinghe said, if a SLFP MP or provincial councillor speaks at even an SLPP gathering at the village level, we will record it and take action," he said.

Commenting on why the SLFP has waited for a long time to take action against its members, who had been flirting with the SLPP, the Minister said that political parties wait till they have all the evidence against errant members before any action is taken.

"When I went against United National Party (UNP) leader Ranil Wickremesinghe, he didn't start attacking me immediately. He gathered evidence first and then he took action against me. That's how things are," he said.
