SriLankan Airlines trade unions back restructuring

SriLankan Airlines announced that all trade unions it was attached to had expressed their solidarity with the company's management in the restructuring efforts initiated by the Government under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) with the Ministry of Finance.
Representatives of the trade unions expressed their support for the company at a meeting held on Tuesday 5 December, according to a press release issued by the airline.

This meeting was arranged with SriLankan Airlines Chairman Ajith Dias, CEO Capt. Suren Ratwatte and senior management, along with Minitsry of Finance PPP Unit Chairman, Thilan Wijesinghe. The trade unions represented at the meeting were The Airline Pilots Guild, Flight Attendant Union (FAU), Licensed Aircraft Engineers, Technicians, Executive Association, SLNS, JSS and the Engineers Guild.

At the meeting, they expressed their fullest support to the management of SriLankan Airlines on its restructuring efforts. The unions even set aside their professional and political affiliations, coming together to highlight the importance of securing the national carrier's future.

At the meeting, Chairman Ajith Dias outlined the present financial status of the airline and how its accumulated liabilities have an adverse impact on the country's economy. He also explained that the Government's restructuring initiatives were led by the PPP Unit of the Ministry of Finance, with the help of consultants from the aviation industry.

Accordingly, the Government had set up a special Ministerial Committee headed by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, Minister of Finance and Mass Media Mangala Samaraweera, Minister of Special Assignments Dr Sarath Amunugama, Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation Nimal Siripala de Silva, Minister of Public Enterprise Development Kabir Hashim and Minister of Development Strategies and International Trade Malik Samarawickrama.

The Ministerial Committee is assisted by an Officials Committee, headed by the Secretary to the Treasury Dr. R. H. S. Samaratunga, which consists of Ministry of Public Enterprise Development Secretary Ravindra Hewavitharana, National Agency for Public Private Partnership Chairman (convener) Thilan Wijesinghe, Senior Adviser to the Ministry of Finance and Mass Media Mano Tittawella, Ministry of Public Enterprise Development Director Dr. Roshan Perera, and SriLankan Airlines Chairman/Chief Executive Officer Ajith Dias.
