The Department of Probation and Child Care Services of the Western Province, claims that daily between 20 and 30 children become orphans and arrive at the Department and are in turn sent to voluntarily-run children's homes. Commissioner of the Department, Chandima Dissanayake said that currently, there were 14,000 children who were registered as orphans in the country, with 5,000 in the Western Province alone. She added that there were 120 orphanages and childcare centres, which were voluntarily-run homes, the administration and management of which was controlled by committees appointed in this regard by each of said 120 institutions.

In such a context, it is learnt that, all existing facilities should continue to remain, while in the event any offence is perpetrated on the children by those involved with the daily administration and management of such institutions, such persons responsible for the said actions, should be removed from their positions immediately and criminal action should be pursued against them. Shutting down such institutions, merely on the basis of a crime having occurred within its premises, is not in any way an option that could or should be considered, a Departmental source, who wished to remain anonymous, added.
