The Central Environmental Authority (CEA) had decided to take legal action against persons who use polythene in any way for propaganda in connection with the upcoming Local Government (LG) elections.

Therefore, those who use polythene for election propaganda rallies will face imprisonment of not more than two years or a fine not exceeding Rs 10,000.

CEA Chairman Professor Lal Dharmasiri told Ceylon Today, it will be decided by Court whether to impose either punishment or both.

He also said, this law will be very strictly implemented.

President Maithripala Sirisena, as the Minister of Mahaweli Development and Environment on Thursday 14 December, instructed the CEA to ban the use of polythene for LG election propaganda.

"We will not allow candidates, their representatives or anyone else to use polythene for decorations at functions for election propaganda, such as strings of flags made of polythene. We are preparing to carry out inspections through a special investigation and raiding unit of CEA or an Environment Police," Professor Dharmasiri added.

He also said, the CEA will hold a media briefing..... next Tuesday through which they intend to make the people aware of the issue.

The Government has already banned the use and manufacture of polythene products of 20 microns or less, with effect from 1 September.

However, consumers allege that laws concerning the use of polythene are not being implemented properly.
