Polls monitors alleged that certain female Local Government candidates, contesting from the main political parties were not actively campaigning and were not being provided with the necessary support to succeed at the upcoming elections.

Elections monitoring body, the Campaign for Free and Fair Elections (CaFFE) said only a few women were actively campaigning to win the votes of electors of the area they represent.

In other cases, female candidates had strong male candidates as opposing candidates, Executive Director of CaFFE, Rajith Keerthi Tennakoon noted.

The number of elected members depend on the number of votes the political party or independent group garners at the upcoming election, he pointed out, adding that it was imperative that all candidates campaign to obtain votes.
