The Institute of Quantity Surveyors, Sri Lanka (IQSSL) emphasized that the time had come to create social opinion via public awareness programmes, to make sustainability a functional requirement of a client.

In the world of construction, buildings have the capacity to make a major contribution to a more sustainable future for our planet, Fellow Member of the IQSSL, Dr. Chandana Jayalath noted, adding that buildings in developed countries account for more than 40 per cent of energy consumption over their lifetime (incorporating raw material production, construction, operation, maintenance and decommissioning). Over half of the world's population now lives in urban environments and it is clear that sustainable buildings have become vital cornerstones for securing long-term environmental, economic and social viability, and in this regard, Sri Lanka is no exception, he added.

"The pace of change means that we do not have the luxury of time. With the urban population swelling by around one million in Colombo itself, there is an urgent need to come up with clever ideas that optimize the sustainable performance of the buildings that we live and work in."

The IQSSL is to host its annual general meeting (AGM) on 26 January, 2018, at the Waters Edge hotel, Battaramulla and the topics of discussion during the AGM will be the imperatives for stakeholders involved with the construction industry and also towards developing a constructive and corporative attitude towards the industry.
