Ciggie agency van waylaid, Rs 18.2M stolen

A van attached to a cigarette agency which was on the way to deposit the day's collection at a private Bank in Nuwara Eliya was waylaid last (2) morning. Cash amounting to Rs 14.5 million and a cheque worth Rs 3.7 million was robbed by three unidentified suspects, Police said.

The Police Media Spokesperson's Office speaking to Ceylon Today reported that the two suspects had intercepted the cigarette agency van on its way to deposit at a private Bank yesterday morning.

The two unidentified suspects had broken the side window of the vehicle, sprayed chilli powder on the driver and assistants and stolen the Rs 14.5 million and made a quick getaway.

The suspects had also stolen a cheque valued at Rs 3.7 million. The Police Media Unit reported that the suspects had then fled the scene of the crime. However, no casualties or serious injuries have been reported.

Nuwara Eliya Police is conducting further investigations.
