Despite repeated warnings from the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) that it will take stern action against those who support any other party, former President, current Parliamentarian and SLFP Adviser Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday (2), made it public that he will lead the Local Government (LG) Election campaign of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP).

Rajapaksa, addressing a gathering at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium, where the SLPP kicked off its campaign, stressed that although the consensual Government consists of two parties, which are the SLFP and the United National Party (UNP), it only carries out the propaganda of the latter.

"My Government carried out gigantic development......projects like the Mattala International Airport and the Hambantota Port.

This Government, during the election times, heavily criticized such projects. They told the public that those projects are a waste.

But now they are selling them for billions," Rajapaksa lashed out.

Furthermore, the current Government blamed me for selling five acres to China to construct the Shangri-La Hotel, but the same people went to the opening ceremony of the hotel and put their names on the plaques, he added.

The former President added, "Selling national assets is not a principle of the SLFP, but of the UNP. However, the UNP uses the SLFP members in the Government to carry out their agendas. That is why an SLFP member signed the agreement to sell the Mattala International Airport."

Rajapaksa had stern criticism of the Government's foreign policy. Remembering that Sri Lanka voted against the United States (US) in the United Nations resolution on Jerusalem, Rajapaksa asserted that the Government is now turning friendly nations into enemies. "They have made the US an enemy now. Sri Lanka has no Generalized Scheme of Preferences for this year. Russia banned our tea. So, the Government agreed to lift the ban on asbestos, which they earlier called deadly. Who gives advices like this? It is only Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe."

Therefore, the candidates who are participating in the LG elections, under the Pohottuwa (lotus bud) symbol have a responsibility to make the general public understand what the current Government is doing to the country, he said. The Government carries out all its agendas with the support of the Tamil National Alliance and the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna. Therefore, every vote cast in the election for those parties can be considered as a betrayal of the country, he elaborated.

"Now the preferential voting system has been abolished. Therefore, the SLPP candidates should focus on winning the electorates they represent. I am sure that the SLPP will win the majority in the Local Government Elections," Rajapaksa concluded.
