Elders islandwide are scheduled to meet President Maithripala Sirisena apprise him of the physical, mental and social challenges and other issues they are faced with, and the need for solutions in this regard.

The Sri Lanka Organization for the Protection of National Elders Rights was instituted for this purpose on 11 January.Convener of the Organization, Anura P. Kasthoori, said that of the problems they would raise with the President, foremost would be the deduction of Rs 100 from the Rs 2,000 monthly allowance, to which he claimed Minister of Social Empower, Welfare, S.B. Dissanayake should take the responsibility for.

He expressed the view that since the majority of the parliamentarians are elders; the concerns brought to the fore by the organization would be of pertinent political importance. "Inefficiencies in the National Secretariat for Elders and injustices perpetrated by them to elders, which have led to elders not being afforded the privileges afforded them, and the suffering that arises as a result of such, will also be brought to the attention of the President. Deviations from the provisions of the Protection of the Rights of Elders Act, No. 9 of 2000 will also be brought to his notice," he explained.
