Several drug busts reported islandwide Indian arrested at BIA with crystal meth worth millions

An Indian national from Tamil Nadu who arrived on 11 January night at the Bandaranaike International Airport, Katunayake was arrested by the Police Narcotics Bureau for attempting to smuggle methamphetamine or crystal meth worth millions of Lankan rupees.

The 50-year-old suspect, a shop owner who arrived in the country on board flight UL124 at 9:45 p.m., was nabbed for the possession of 220 grams of the drug which had been concealed in a false bottom compartment in his luggage.

He was scheduled to be produced before the Minuwangoda Magistrate yesterday (12).

Meanwhile, a group of Navy Marines attached to the Northwestern Naval Command along with the Silawathura Police and the Narcotics Division of Mannar found 356 kilograms of cannabis sativa from Kerala, India during a search conducted in Kayakkuli on 11 January. Elsewhere, a suspect possessing 1,000 Tramadol tablets was nabbed by a team of Naval personnel attached to the Western Naval Command in coordination with Special Task Force personnel of Gonahena during a raid carried out in Wellampitiya on 11 January.
